My extensive 25 year background as an audio, music and education professional merges with Virtual and Augmented Reality design and development, and immersive audio implementation, to give me a unique approach to the human-centered design that is necessitated by XR applications. Extended Reality (XR) is an umbrella term encapsulating Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), Mixed Reality (MR), and everything in between. I have completed several courses with Circuit Stream, including their C# Fundamentals With Unity and XR Development With Unity courses, and I am currently enrolled in their Interaction Design & Prototyping For XR course.
I studied audio engineering at Columbia Academy Of Recording Arts, and then studied contemporary music in the Vancouver Community College Applied Music program. The diversity of their music program served me well, as I have always been interested in a very eclectic array of music. Following this, I began a career as a full time musician - playing countless concerts and gigs with a long list of Vancouver artists at a long list of venues and festivals, the whole while working on my audio recording chops. I became a partner at an East Vancouver recording studio, and worked with many artists in a wide variety of genres. Shortly after VCC, a teacher and mentor of mine from VCC, Sal Fererras, introduced me to Nettie Wild, who was looking for a composer for a film project. I didn't end up doing the gig, but this event inspired me to attend the Music For Film And Multimedia program at Vancouver Film School. I continued to work as a session musician, became a private music educator, composed music for films, produced albums, and played thousands of shows.
In 2016 I was asked by Vancouver VR film agency Perspective Films, to compose a Pink Floyd-style piece for a 360 virtual reality film they were making for Idealens. This was my introduction to XR and eventually sent me down the road to Immersive Audio(aka Spatial Audio, Ambisonics). Wanting to have more content for creating immersive sound mixes, I got myself a 360 video camera and learned how to use Premiere Pro. I started making my own 360 videos to have more visual content for creating immersive audio mixes. I acquired DearVR's Spatial Connect and DearVR Pro apps and ran them through my Steinberg Nuendo DAW. Spatial Connect is an incredible software that provides users the ability to mix audio in 360 degree sound, inside the VR environment while wearing a VR headset (in my case an Oculus Quest). In 2020 I had the opportunity do spatial audio sound design and music mixing for a VR film by Vancouver's Emerge Studios. Later that year, I decided that I would like to explore the possibility of creating not only "immersive 3D audio experiences", but also interactive, immersive 3D audio experiences. Thus began my learning of C# and the Unity 3D game engine, for creating Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality applications. I completed Circuit Stream's C# Fundamentals With Unity course, and followed it up with their XR Development With Unity course, and am now studying XR design and interaction with them. I am fascinated with XR technology, I believe it is the future, and that it has the capacity to inspire and change lives for the better.
